ShoutBox offers CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). When captcha is enabled anonymous visitors must enter a series of numbers and/or letters displayed in the captcha image frame for their posted message to be accepted.

Messages posted in ShoutBox are stored either in a text file or as a database table entry. Which method is used is a selectable option parameter in module preferences.

To allow the ShoutBox block to become extremely narrow in width there is a Preference parameter "Text Line Length" which controls the displayed width of the shout input field. There is also a parameter so you can disable the display of user avatars next to the messages.
